Skye Blue Humphrey Bogart

Picture
Our Bogie was born to Tia and Liam October 2013.  He is a black tortoiseshell point with white male.  As a male calico AND a chimera, he is our "unicorn" cat!

Male tortoiseshell/tortie/calico (3 color) cats are extremely rare, and they are thought to be sterile.  One estimate is that 1 in 3,000 tortoiseshell (calico) cats are male, or something like 1 in 400,000 cats.  Of these, it is estimated that 1 in 10,000 male torties are able to sire kittens.  Bogie is one of these!  He fathered a beautiful litter of kittens with Cait in May 2015!  Photos below.

Bogie is also a chimera, caused by a blending of two embryos. We know that he is a chimera because of his unique coloring and the fact that he was able to sire kittens.  Male calico/tortoiseshell cats either have an extra chromosome (XXY) and are sterile, or are chimeras, and fertile.  Since he was a father, he must be a chimera. Bogie is now a beloved retired member of our family.
